Hungarian Broadcaster MTV have just started to find a song for the 54th Eurovision Song Contest. There are less than 3 weeks to send songs from artists or groups. The deadline of submission is February 2, 17:00 CET. The rules are usual, but in this year, an internal jury will give a ticket to somebody for one of the semifinals in Moscow. There is no limitation against foreigner composers or singers.

However, we expected a high quality show, we could see a show at a normal quality last Saturday. Unfortunately the new voting method didn’t manage to reach the better outcome of JESC 2008. Much more countries from the East participated, and you have to consider that all the countries like to vote for its neighbour or „brother” country. It is usual. Well, it seems that the method of 50% jury and 50% televoting is more suitable for national finals. This system verified its success a long time ago.

At September 19th 2008 was decided that The Netherlands will be represented by “The Toppers” at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, to be held in Moscow.

AMBRUS Rita, the participant of Hungarian National Final 2005 for Eurovision Song Contest, entered the Hungarian edition of Pop Idol called Megasztár. This is the 4th season of the show.

EBU is planning some new programmes together with its members. The television professionals, who consulted in Budapest and were hosted by Hungarian Broadcaster MTV these days, elected a new leader of EBU. Jean-Paul Phillippot, the president of RTBF (Belgium) got the biggest amount of the votes.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most popular shows of the European public televisions. Many sport and cultural programmes are made with the common contribution of the EBU members, however, there are new plans too.

Fritz Pleitgen, the president of EBU told in the evening news of MTV (Híradó) that they would start a new coproduction called „Green on air”. It is about the more and more serious effects of global warming.
The new leader of EBU will control this programme and he added: „It is good if the high quality programmes can get to the bigger audience. But these numbers can’t show us our achievement.” The new president thinks that all the public televisions have to keep the cultural variegation.

The Hungarian press published a lot of articles about Csézy’s performance after the ESC 2008. Of course, everyone was disappointed because of the result. Csézy performed a traditional Eurovision song and some hoped that she will manage to move the contest to its original, ”right” way.

Csézy published a declaration on her homepage.

”I would like to thank to RAKONCZAI Viktor for the beautiful song, and to the group Fool Moon for the execution of the performance. I have been receiving a lot of greeting letters that give me a lot of power! I would have loved to be in the final of course. When we got out from the stage, we said that we have done everything for giving a nice production at a high level. I sang the song and done the performance as I had imagined. The rest was not up to us. Anyway, I want to thank for the votes I got in the national final to let me participate in such a big competition.”

The Hungarian viewers paid less attention for the show than the previous year: the ratings were less than 10%. In 2006, 34,7% of the adults saw Magdi’s success, when she performed her song in the final. Magdi is a star of a popular Hungarian commercial station, that’s why the interest was much better last year. Csézy was in a ”deathgroup”, all the contestants had very strong songs and productions in the second semi, this is the reason of Csézy’s poor result. The other reason is that those countries who like the Hungarian music couldn’t vote that evening. For example, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria and Germany were in the other group. The Hungarian viewers gave 12 points to Azerbaijan that surprised everyone.

There are a lot of rumours about the Hungarian participation in the ESC 2009 but we can hear more positive reactions about Eurovision. Just one performance can win and there are countries that have never won the contest but they haven’t given up. This fact gives a lot of energy to the Hungarian fans and maybe to the other countries that received just a few points. We want to see and hear the diversity of Europe year by year!
