Greece celebrated their 30th participation last year, they debuted in 1974. Their best result is winning the contest in 2005 when Helena Paparizou sang Number 1. Greece is one of the countries who reached the final every single time since the 2 semifinal system. This year Maria-Elena Kyriakou represents the country with her song One last breath. Take a seat and enjoy the interview I made with her!
What was your first step in your music carreer?
My first big step into the greek music scene took place last year when i won the first edition of the Voice of Greece. Since then I have released one album and the eurovision single, while Ii am currently preparing my 2nd album.
This year you were selected to represent Greece at Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna. What does it mean for you?
It means a lot. I feel very thankful to the greek public that voted for me for the 2nd time within a year in a televised contest. Since being part of the Eurovision Song Contest was always a dream for me, my excitiment was huge. I remember myself watching the contest every year despite the fact that most of the times I was having exams at that period. I dreamt about how it would have been for me standing on such a big stage, Well as it turns out i am going to find out really soon! Not only I am now having the chance to proudly represent Greece but also I will be able to meet a lot of people in Vienna.
If you could pick up only one word which word describes your life and why?
Fairytale! What has happened to me so far seems like one. They say that miracles can happen only in fairytales but what I have been expeiencing in my life are small and big miracles every day. The biggest one is that I managed to be a mother of 3 wonderful boys at such a young age. And now I am on a path I really love, chasing my dream in music.
Who are your favourite singers?
That’s a very easy question actually! Celine Dion and Whitney Houston are probably my absolute idols. In fact, getting the chance to meet Celine Dion one day is my pther big dream yet to happen!
This year there are 40 entries. Do you have your favourites?
I have a lot of favourites. Italy, Spain, Sweden and Albania to name a few.
What would you like to achieve in the contest?
My main goal is to have an excellent performance so that all Greeks can be proud of it. Hopefully this can bring me a good result. I am also looking forward to meet new people in Vienna.
What inspires you?
My children. They are now the purpose of my life and the source of any inspiration and energy i need.
Would you like to leave a message for the readers of this interview at ESCHungary?
I would like to thank them for reading this interview and I wish they enjoy this year’s Eurovision by keeping in mind that it might be a contest but above all it’s a great chance to meet new artists from all over Europe and for nations to unite.
Thanks to Maria-Elena for this interview and special thanks to Gina Fountoulaki.
