Cristina Scarlat is the representative of Moldova this year with her song, Wild soul. This country have qualified for the Grand Final each time since 2009, but they haven’t beated their best result (2005, 3rd place). Can Cristina and her soul bring the first ever victory for Moldova? We will see it soon, until this read my interview I made with the singer.
When did your singing career start?
My first memory of performing in front of an audience goes back to when I was 3 years old. I used to sing for my big family at every celebration, and we have plenty of them in Moldova. Music has always been an important part of me so it is difficult to define a certain time when my carrier started.
This year you were selected to represent Moldova at Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen. What were your first impressions when you heared your name as a winner?
It seemed surreal. I was just asking myself: “Am I dreaming or am I actually living my dream?” Even now, I have to pinch myself once in a while to make sure that it is really happening. At that moment I couldn’t fully process the information as there were so many things happening at once, so I guess that the true and complete excitement kicked off the next day.
What does it mean for you represent a country at Eurovision?
It is a huge responsibility and a great honor. Singing on the stage of Copenhagen represents more than achieving my own personal goals; it is a duty to perform on the behalf of those who gave me their vote of confidence. My team and I are fully aware of the expectations so our intention is to exceed them. We are working hard to improve every single detail so get ready to be amazed.
How was your song created? Was it written especially for Eurovision?
My song was created by two very talented professionals: Ivan Akulov and Lidia Scarlat. Their purpose was to bring together a deep message. I was very happy listening to the end result and at the same time I could identify myself with the meaning of the lyrics.
What’s the main message of your song, Wild soul?
The song questions the meaning of the human existence and it tackles the continuous battle between the human being and Time. There are moments when we feel defeated and the disappointment grows bigger than hope but it is important to keep in mind that each challenge is a lesson; a lesson that teaches us that we are stronger than we thought, a reminder that we only need to take a deep breath and find the warrior within ourselves. The message of the song is that we should not look back with regret and we should not try to tame our soul. We need to live without the fear of being ourselves as each of us has a special inner power that is waiting to be discovered.
Do you follow Eurovision Song Contest? If yes, since when?
Oh, yes I do. I haven’t missed a performance for 10 years.
Who are your favourite singers? (In the world, not only Eurovision singers.)
I think that Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James are examples of pure talent. I admire them greatly.
This year there will be 37 countries in the contest. Do you have your favourites?
From what I have listened so far, I can say that this year Eurovision will host 37 very talented contestants. I am very happy that I will have the chance to meet them all. I have a few favourites, I can’t wait to see them live.
You already shooted the official video for the song. What was the concept behind it?
The music video is a metaphor for time, space and the power of soul, three metaphysical elements that define our lives. It’s dark and mystical atmosphere might be scary for some people, but shadows can be beautiful, too :). It was produced by a young team of filmmakers, BR Films, it was a pleasure working with youngsters!
Are you still working on the coreography? Is it going to be different we saw at Moldovan National Final?
It is definitely going to be different. We know that the audience is always waiting for more and we are working hard in order to surprise them with a fresh performance.
What are your expectations, your main aims at Eurovision?
I take great pride in being from Moldova and in representing it at Eurovision. That is why I aim to make my country as proud as I am. Another promise to me is that I would give my best on the stage from Copenhagen and I will enjoy fully each moment of that extraordinary experience. I expect to meet talented people and I am sure that together we’ll offer Europe an unforgettable show.
What inspires you?
As weird as it may sound, I get my inspirations from everything I live. I have been blessed with two wonderful children that motivate me every single morning that I wake up. I am surrounded by very special people who are optimistic and determined, talented and perseverant. Enjoying this beautiful experience of representing Moldova at Eurovision also inspires me greatly. I have learned that dreams come true only if you believe in them. I remember reading once that you don’t see things as they are but as we are. And I am a wild soul ready for the journey.
What are your plans after Eurovision? Will you relax?
Actually, a very busy period of time awaits me after Eurovision. I will launch another music video in the summer and I will focus on my career as singer. Apart from that, I will enjoy my daily moments of happiness brought by my children.
