This time the representative of the Armenians is the singer-comedian Aram MP3. In Denmark they will mark their 8th participation at Eurovision Song Contest, and they have really good results: most of the times they were in the top 10, expect for the previous 2 participation. I talked with Aram MP3 about her music carrier, present and Eurovision song.
When did your singing career start?
During my school years I was coughing hardly and nobody could find the reason. Doctors advised my parents to take me to choir, stating that would help me overcome my health problems. So at the age of 12-13 I started to sing in the choir. Since that I participated in various concerts in different event halls in Armenia. I remember one of them was in the State Opera House which has one of the largest stages in our country. As a teenager that was an unforgettable excitement of singing from that stage!
Oh, by the way, singing really helped me to improve my health. So my gratitude goes to the doctors who advised me to start singing!
This year you were selected to represent Armenia at Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen. What does it mean for you?
Oh, I feel a huge excitement. I could only dream about my participation in this kind of large-scale song contest. It will be Armenia’s 8 year anniversary with Eurovision Song Contest this year and it’s an honor for me to represent my country in Denmark. As I told you about my feelings during my teenage time to sing from biggest stages in Armenia, now I’m looking forward for my even bigger stage in Copenhagen!
How your song was (Not alone) created?
The competition during selection of Armenian song for ESC was pretty tough. We have received more than 75 submissions from Armenian and international musicians. Music for „Not Alone” is composed by me, lyrics are written by my good friend and colleague Garik Papoyan and the instrument arrangement is done by Lilit Navasardyan. I am sure that the unusual synthesis of musical genres will be appreciated by quality music lovers who follow Eurovision Song Contest.
I know that you are a comedian and a singer. A lot of people expected a funny song from Armenia, but Not alone is a beautiful and strong ballad. How did you decide to sing this one?
Well, surprises and unexpected things- that’s what I’m famous for! During my concerts audience always expects something new and unusual. I enjoy surprising people and waiting for the feedback from them. This song is my surprise present to Eurovision fans all over the world and I hope they will enjoy it.
What’s the message of your song?
This song is quite an emotional one. In our modern dynamic world we are so busy with many things in our life, that sometimes we forget about small things that make us happy. „Not alone” is made from love, human feelings and emotions. After listening to it, I am sure people will rethink what really makes them happy and really….. „What if it is all in one kiss”
Many people like your song and at the moment (5h April 2014) you are at the 1st place in ESC to win odds. Are you surprised with this result? Do you think odds mean anything?
Well, that means that good music always finds a respective audience. I want to thank those people who keep writing positive and supporting messages to me. That gives me the energy and confidence that there are quality music lovers all over the world. Especially I am touched by supportive mails I got from Armenians living in Budapest. This means that national selection of Armenian song for Eurovision was right.
Do you follow Eurovision Song Contest? If yes, since when?
I was watching Eurovision since I was a kid. This is a very prestigious event to take part in. I remember world known bands and singers performing at the contest, like ABBA, Patricia Kaas or Celine Dion. 2006 was very special year for all Armenians in the world, as for the first time Andre presented our country and we became the member of this music community.
Who are your favorite singers? (In the world, not only Eurovision singers.)
Oh, you are asking a question I can talk forever and I am sure you don’t have that much time. Just to draw an overall picture of my musical taste I can mention such singers, like Elvis Presley, Billy Holiday, BB King, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra… Music created by those artists is eternal and will never get old.
This year there will be 37 countries in the contest. Do you have your favorites?
I am carefully following ESC news and enjoy listening to new entries. Participants of the semi-final are really very talented and I am happy to share the stage with professional musicians. May 6 is going to be a promising day and I looking forward to singing my song and saying to all the people around the world that they are Not Alone.
What are your expectations, main aims at Eurovision?
I want to perform a good music show for all Eurovision fans and receive a good feedback from them. For instance I would love to have the feedback which will sound like “12 points go to Armenia”
What inspires you?
People who surround me are a good source of inspiration. I love communicating with new people and experiencing new feelings. Every time before going out to the stage I’m feeling excited which gives me inspiration and energy to perform on stage. Can’t wait to experience that in Copenhagen.
What are your plans after Eurovision? Will you relax?
I have to prepare for hosting Eurovision in Yerevan in 2015, no time for relaxing! 😉
What would you like to send to the Hungarian readers and fans of Aram MP3?
I want to wish all of them new discoveries, in all terms: discover something new in music, something new in artists and genres.
Thanks for Aram MP3 for this interview and special thanks to Hasmik Soghomonyan.
We wish good luck in Copenhagen!
